Porchlight
How Porchlight works

How gatherings work

  1. 1It's on the calendarYour leaders set up when the group meets, like every other Sunday or the 2nd and 4th Tuesday. Dates appear a couple of months ahead, and skip any breaks (like a summer break).
  2. 2Find a dateYour group's page shows the coming dates as tiles. Tap one to see when and where. A dot means that date still needs something: a host, dishes, or people for jobs (the orange number on its card says how many). Tap the card to open the gathering's page; the chat button at its top opens the group chat.
  3. 3Say if you're comingTap Going, Maybe or Can't. Coming with family? One answer covers your household: tick who's coming, and add a note for the host if you like. To change it, tap Change on the bar at the bottom of the gathering's page.
  4. 4Get readyIf there's a reading or topic ("Chapters 10–14", "John 3"), it's right on the gathering, and in the Sunday email.
  5. 5HostingIf your group meets in homes, a leader asks someone to host each date. You'll get a notification: tap Yes, I'll host (or we'll, for a household) and add your address. (Some groups let anyone offer.)
  6. 6Bring somethingIf there's a shared meal, open Menu on the gathering's page to see what's still needed. Tap Bring it (or Bring one, when a few people are bringing the same thing); for something open-ended, like "an entree", you'll say what it'll be. Or tap Bring something else if the planner allows it.
  7. 7Pitch inSome gatherings have jobs, like childcare or leading the study. Open Jobs and tap I'll do it on any open spot, and you'll get a reminder.
  8. 8RidesIf your group has rides on: need a lift, or have room in the car? On a gathering's page, open Rides and tap I need a ride or I can drive. Drivers can tap I'll take them, and you'll both get a heads-up.
  9. 9Pick a nightWhen a leader asks Which night works?, tap every date you can make. They'll pick the one that suits the most people, and you'll hear when it's set.
  10. 10Answer a pollA leader can ask the group anything ("Where should the Christmas party be?"). It's at the top of the group's page: tap your answer, and tap it again to take it back.
  11. 11Never miss oneTurn on notifications, and tap Add to calendar on your profile (your picture, top right) so every gathering lands in your phone's calendar (and stays up to date).
  12. 12Look backTap Calendar on the home screen for a month of every gathering in all your groups: back to see what's been, forward for what's coming (swipe, or the arrows). Or, on a group's page, tap All at the end of the dates, then Past.

Reminders, and when they come

  • A few days before (usually 2), everyone gets "Are you coming?". If you've said yes, it's a friendly "see you Sunday".
  • The evening before, anyone who hasn't answered gets one more nudge.
  • The host gets the headcount and any dietary needs the evening before.
  • If a gathering is moved, gets a new place, or is cancelled, everyone hears right away.
  • Some gatherings have a limit on spots, or a date to sign up by. Once it's full, saying Going puts you on the waitlist, and you'll hear the moment a spot opens.
  • Reminders come as phone notifications if you've turned them on, otherwise by email. You can change that on your profile.

On a gathering's page

  • In this gathering lists what's going on: the host first, then the menu, jobs and whatever else your group uses. Tap a row to open it. Orange means it still needs someone; teal means it's yours or it's set.
  • Tap the count of who's coming (like 12 coming) to see everyone, by household.
  • The calendar button at the top adds just this gathering to your calendar.
